Hello, and welcome to our little corner of the world!
My twin and I will discuss Recent Teen Shoujo Manga Recommendations for today's segment! We started reading manga when we were twelve, so we understand what the teens yearn for...some hardcore friendship and romance!
*Note: These recs are somewhat newer, books published between 2019-2024, but we have a list for older manga if you'd like to also read that list here!
Before we begin, we want to quickly go over what Shoujo Manga is for those new to manga or the genre. So in the simplest of terms…
Shoujo translates to “girl” in Japanese, making Shoujo Manga = Girl Comics.
So all of these recommendations are geared towards a younger “teen girl” audience but anyone can read them!
But we digress, so let's just get right into our list!
*List is set in no particular order
1. Kubo Won't Let Me Invisible
Junta Shiraishi blends into the background so much that even his classmates fail to spot him. His goal is to make the most of his high school years, but that pesky invisibility gets in the way…until Nagisa Kubo notices him! Kubo’s playful teasing kicks Shiraishi out of his comfort zone and begins a friendship—or maybe something more?
Our Thoughts:
This is a great manga that is filled with friendship, blossoming romance, and funny moments in between! This series is also completed and ends very sweetly, so there's no wondering...if you do decide to buy all 12 (*a moment of silence for your wallet).
Either way, we highly recommend this series!
2. Skip and Loafer
Mitsumi is bound for high school in Tokyo! She's got book smarts, but this small-town girl is about to find out she's massively unprepared for the social norms of big-city high schoolers.
Our Thoughts:
I really enjoy Mitsumi's character and have enjoyed watching her growth from the first volume. She comes into the city with a somewhat naïve mindset, and while she still kinda has that mentality, I think she's really come into her own as the story progresses. Overall this is a cute series we recommend!

3. The Girl with The Sanpaku Eyes
Amane Mizuno is struggling with her social life. To her friends and family, she's a shy, diligent girl. But to her classmates, her face screams intense, mean and maybe stand-offish. So when Amane falls for her classmate Katou her whole world seems to get flustered and agitated.
Our Thoughts:
Such an adorable and simple series! This is also a short completed series so If you're interested in trying one out, this would be a good one to start with. The characters are adorable and it has color inside which is a fun extra that not all manga books have!

4. The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity
Chidori High is a boys' school that takes in the dregs of society with the lowest grades. Next door stands Kikyo Girls' High, where the wealthy, high-class families send their precious daughters. Chidori second-year Rintaro, who has a fierce face but a gentle heart, is helping at his family's patisserie when he meets a girl named Kaoruko. The two hit it off right away...but this blissful peace is quickly disturbed when Rintaro discovers that Kaoruko is actually a student at Kikyo. Worse, she doesn't seem to realize what a huge problem this really is! Will these two be able to forge a path for themselves, and sidestep the traps (metaphorical and literal) laid by their classmates?
Our Thoughts:
This is such an adorable series that has a cute manga spin on the old classic theme of Romeo and Juliet! I really love both Rintaro and Kaoruko and their development is so sweet and precious! Well worth a read!

5. Last Game
In elementary school, the rich and spoiled Yanagi Naoto ruled his class in studies and sports. But he suffered the first setback of his life when Kujou Mikoto, a girl from a poor family, transferred to his school and outperformed him at every turn. Reeling from this unforgivable blow to his pride, Naoto decided that he had to make Mikoto lose at something…by making her lose her heart to him! Now, both in college, Naoto proposes one “last game” with Mikoto–but who will be the winner?
Our Thoughts:
This is a really cute series! Both of the characters are cute and we liked the age sequences of them from various ages in the first book. You got a cute insight to their character growth. Kujou and Yanagi are a pretty adorable pairing too, definitely recommend this one!

6. The Girl I like Forgot Her Glasses
Komura starts his school year with a new seat neighbor in homeroom—the bespectacled Mie. Before long, he’s nursing a raging crush on his quirky classmate who’s always forgetting her glasses! While this might be ideal for Komura to get to know Mie better, will his poor heart give out from the daily strain of being up close and personal with the girl he likes?!
Our Thoughts:
Really love this series, and not just because we wear glasses too...but it's a really simple yet sweet story that had us squealing from time to time. The characters are adorable and the storylines are simple but cute too!

7. My Clueless First Friend
One lonely, gloomy fifth-grade girl is the target of her classmates' relentless bullying and teasing—that is, until a new kid arrives on the scene! Friendly Takada is as clueless as he is well-meaning, but somehow he possesses the magic ability to start drawing "Grim Reaper" Nishimura out of her shell. As the elementary schoolers experience all the fun of a childhood summer together—from going to the pool to picking sunflowers to watching fireworks—an unusual friendship blossoms!
Our Thoughts:
Now I know what you're thinking...they look a little young. And technically yes, they are fifth-graders. But hear us out! This story is so adorable and is giving all of the heartwarming vibes anyone could want! Even if you think it might be too young for you, we encourage you to just try it out! As we wouldn't put it on this list if we didn't love it ourselves!

8. Shikimori's Not Just A Cutie
Shikimori and Izumi are high school sweethearts. They hold hands walking home from school, they flirt in the halls, they tease each other. But Shikimori knows what she wants, and how to get it, and she can turn from cutie to cool in an instant.
Our Thoughts:
We think this series is really cute as it focuses on small sweet moments between a high school couple. Most of them lead up to being a couple but this kinda cuts through that and we found it refreshing. We will say that this is a long series. 20 books long...which for us is a bit overkill for such a simple storyline. But its still super cute so we don't really blame them for riding it out as long as they have.

9. Miss Miyazen Would Love To Get Closer To You
Two high school classmates, Sakura Miyazen and Sota Matsubayashi, are polar opposites: Miyazen is a prim and proper young lady, while Matsubayashi is a brusque former troublemaker. They’re secretly dying to talk to each other, but their backgrounds are so different, they can’t seem to strike up a conversation! And why does a simple greeting make the both of them turn red?!
Our Thoughts:
We love this series because it's super sweet and is only 4 books in total, so it's one of the most money-sensitive book series to get...as we know that can be a concern for these long (*Cough: Komi Can't Communicate) series. The interactions between Sakura and Sota are adorable and their friendship to lovers development is extremely cute to watch!

10. Komi Can't Communicate
Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve! With the whole student body keeping their distance and Komi unable to utter a single word, friendship might be forever beyond her reach.
Timid Tadano is a total wallflower, and that’s just the way he likes it. But all that changes when he finds himself alone in a classroom on the first day of high school with the legendary Komi. He quickly realizes she isn’t aloof—she’s just super awkward. Now he’s made it his mission to help her on her quest to make 100 friends!
Our Thoughts:
Now this one is more of an added bonus since it's probably the most popular one on this list. But We personally love the story and the characters! The growth has been so fun to watch and Todano and Komi's relationship is so lovely! But be warned, this series is not for the faint of heart (book-wise) as it has 37 books in the series.
While we do think 37 books is pretty crazy, the story itself is good and is a really fun series to get into if you like the premise. Though there is an anime so you can maybe start with that before you get the books? Either way, we recommend this one too!
Check out, Komi Can't Communicate, here!
If you've made it to the end of this list, thank you for reading! We hope that this list was helpful and possibly gave you an idea of you're next manga book series?
Either way, if you're a parent looking to get your kids a manga book, the list above is a great starting point! And if you're just curious bout shoujo manga books then I hope this list was somewhat enlightening to you!
If you enjoy any of these recommendations or have some of your own then we would love to hear them, so write them down below!
Until Next Time...
